I have been working on my entry for the Art Order Challenge, Levi the Bone Whistle Corpsman, a bit more. I added some more detail and changed the posture and poses of the characters so that they were more accurate with the perspective. If you want to check out the other entry, which I totally think you should because they are pretty fantastic, click here . If you don’t check it out then you’ll just have to be satisfied with mine 🙂

Art Order Challenge Levi the Bone Whistle Corpsman

I follow this website for freelance fantasy artist called The Art Order. It is quite an awesome website and frequently they will have challenges for artist to create illustrations where an actual art director will critique and judge the pieces submitted. They recently posted a challenge called Levi the Bone Whistle Corpsman, which is supposed to depict a balding 30 something year old grave digger, Levi, and his skeleton father. They asked for sketches to be submitted first and then a final illustration to be submitted. I was a little nervous because I have never done an Art Order challenge before and they are quite intimidating, but I said what the hey and decided to try it out. The worst that could happen is I get bashed by a fantastic well known art director,  but atleast they’ll see my work haha!! So first up is my initial thumbnails sketches.

I got some decent feedback on #3 so decided to push that one a bit further

You can see this sketch as well as some pretty amazing fantasy art on this other website that is linked to Art Order, WIPnation

Stay tuned for more Levi updates!!

I thought I would share with you all my process in creating the Mistborn piece. I did a little more tweaking on it as well so here is the finalized image, as of right now, of the illustration.

D is for Domovoi

This little cutie may not be a monster like the rest of them, but when I found out about the small hairy house elves in Slavic Folklore, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.  According to the folklore, these little fellows are small, masculine, bearded, and hairy, and can sometimes impersonate their masters or the owners of the house that they are living in. I am pleased to introduce you my newest tiny friend, the Domovoi.

C is for Cerastes

I had a hard time doing this monster, Cerastes, because I am terrified of snakes!!! But when I read about a horned serpent, I knew I had to get it a shot, even if all the references I was looking at almost scared me away.  I faced my fear and present to you my version of the deadly Cerastes.

B is for Banshee

Letter B for my monsters A through Z, Banshee!! For those of you who may not know exactly what a banshee is, banshees are from Irish mythology and are usually women spirits that wail when someone is about to die. WAAAAAAAA!

I follow this really incredible artist, Christopher Burdett, who draws mainly monsters, and draws them incredibly well. A little while ago on his blog he drew a monster for every letter of the alphabet, which I thought was a great idea. I bought this book, Giants, Monsters, and Dragons: An Encyclopedia of Folklore, Legend, and Myth, which unfortunately hasn’t been delivered yet but it has descriptions of different types of monsters. I got to briefly skim through the pages and came across the monster, Acephalos, which will be my letter A! An acephalos, is a greek monster that resembles a headless human with eyes and a scary mouth in the middle of its’ chest. Are you frightened yet?
